Women in Healthcare

A Co-Curricular Activity: A Panel hosted by Faith Mitchell at Howard University

The event featured three Black women as panelists discussing Public Health. They offered backgrounds in stark contrast to one another, yet they managed to share common anecdotes and offer similar advice for Black women looking to delve into the world of Healthcare.

With backgrounds in dermatology, nursing, psychology, and social work they discussed their differing paths to healthcare and shared responsibility to show black women coming after them the possibilities in store for them. But not only was the event an anthology of narratives it was a fervent call to action.

These panelists urged us to pursue healthcare in order to service the needs of Black people in a capacity which has yet to be fulfilled.

"Healthcare looks different for us than it does for other races," said Dr. Hope Mitchell as her two copanelists nodded emphatically. Throughout the night they repeatedly highlighted the the importance of cultural competence as well as having black professionals in the field of healthcare to truly understand and treat our needs as a community.
